More news from SDCC, some recommendations for the younger comic book reader and more!

by alexross422003

Hey guys! Let's start!

The Aftermath line of comics seems to have some good ideas going for it. However, with some writers that are hit or miss, I may pass. And the worst move that they're making: No TPBs in the near future.

....or a sign of insanity. Anyway, good job Peter!

This seems to be a horrid game since:

A-Sudden release date out of the blue. I mean, who has heard of this game in the past few months?

B-Most Movie-to-game franchises usually stink with the exception being the James Bond (since Goldeneye) and the Lord of the Rings games.

This game seems that it would have everything a good pub sim should have except one thing:Where are pub brawls?

Who could've seen this coming? Midway working on the PC. And their first titles to come are...Unreal? Yes, my friends, Unreal indeed.

Okay guys, as you may remember, this received was on my top 5 of E3 list, now Nintendo has unveiled a better looking version of the DS and it's final name...Nintendo DS. Can you say Game & Watch?

The only downside, like Armored Core from our last column is...it will only be released in Japan....for now.

In a surprise move, Activision has announced work on a game based on the Ultimate Spiderman comic book. Treyarch will be developing the game, but no other details about it were released. Hopefully, Brian Michael Bendis helps the developers with the script.

In a shocking annoucement, Majesco has saved the game, Psychonauts, and is ready to publish it. No release date has been set.

EA has announced a sequel to their succesful NBA Street series. Some of the new features including creating courts and moves. Online play will be on the Xbox and PS2 versions of the game.

Besides another NBA Street game, EA also announced that a sequel to NFL Street is in the works. The new game features new modes of play, and the ability to perform wall moves and style catches. Online play is only for PS2 and Xbox.

So now that means everyone can now complain about Duke Nukem Forever more. Yay!

That's right, an MMORPG based on the Shenmue series is in the works! Players will be placed in 1980's Hong Kong and China and play the role of militants. JC Entertainment is handling Korean development of the game while T2 Technology handles the Chinese version of the game. Yu Suzuki will have some part in the development of this game. Whether or not this game goes stateside has not yet been determined.

VU games has announced that it will publish Irrational Games Freedom Force sequel: Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich. However, the game also has a new release date in early 2005.

So, little Timmy, what comic do you want?

In the comic book market, there are quite a few kid targeted comic books on the shelf. However, not all of them are good. So, right now, I'm giving you my recommendations for which kid-oriented comics you need to buy. Let's start:

Mary Jane-First on the list is Mary Jane, a comic book about Mary Jane dealing with school, friends, and the neighborhood friendly Spiderman! Yep, this comic is slightly based on the Spiderman franchise. However, it does have some good moments on it's own.

With McKeever at the reigns, the dialogue and characterization are good, though not great like his previous works. Some great art doesn't hurt this comic with great facial expressions and a style that fits the comic perfectly. The only problem is that since this is somewhat based on all of Spidey's past adventures, that the comic may become too predictable. However, McKeever is a great writer so don't expect this comic to be a cake walk. With not much to complain about as far as content, this is perfect for children.

Bone-Now, I am here to tell you about Bone. The story begins when Phoncible Bone and his cousins are kicked out from Boneville. However, a great swarm of locuts seperates the cousins leaving them lost in a distant land. And in the distance, an evil force that searches for one of them...

This is probably one the best all ages stories out there. It features great writing by Jeff Smith that doesn't talk down to the reader with the dialogue. Yet, manages to create a plot with mystery and suprise. Smith also draws the book which fits in the story well. There's not really anything to complain about content wise, so buy this for your child. They'll thank you.

Neotopia-Last,but not least, is Neotopia. The plot begins around a thousand years in the future after a dark age of industry has ended. The story follows Nalyn, the grand duchess of Mathenia. However, she hides her own secret that few know. Speaking of secrets, a dark, secret force is waiting to emerge and it threatens to destroy the world.

Rod Espinosa writes one of the most creative stories ever read. With weird villains, air ships, and a talking dolphin, you probably not find a story like this. And on top of the great story, there just so happens to have some great art. Espinsoa (That's right, writer and artist), has some colorful and cinematic visuals to back up his story. However, there are a few problems that may not be perfect for young readers. There is a beheading in the story, but you never see the beheaded person, just a shadow-like figure. Next, there is a scene when Nalyn falls into a bathtub. However, proper censorship is used well in this scene. That means you don't see anything that a child doesn't need to see. Overall, it's a great comic, but if you don't want your child to see what I described in my warning, then I suggest trying something else.

That's all folk's!
